A fortnight ago I returned from 19 days in Papua New Guinea. I’ve long wanted to visit PNG for so many reasons, one of which was to attend a Cultural Show, or ‘sing-sing’. Last month I attended two: one in Wabag, the capital of Enga province, and the second in Mt Hagen, capital of the Western Highlands Province.
And what an assault on the senses these ‘cultural shows’ (an absurdly unassuming description) were! Vibrant and rhythmic song, dance, chants, and enactments were delivered with intoxicating fervour to local and visiting communities alike. The vivacity and stamina of individual performances were exhilarating, but the sheer exuberance of each day’s en-masse performance left me quite amazed. Little wonder I’m chomping at the bit to return there next week!
If you’ve never experienced a 'sing-sing', I'd thoroughly recommend you do. Travellers with a ‘faint heart’ are advised to arrange their visit through an organised tour. Those with a deep sense of adventure, just do it!
